Turned timeout-prone reports into practical tools.
Optimised SQL and reporting paths for large time-and-attendance datasets, bringing complex reports under one minute and selected core queries down to seconds.
Senior Backend Developer · Software Architect
I’m Jock Huang, an Auckland-based engineer with more than two decades of experience designing backend platforms, distributed systems and cloud infrastructure—from billion-record migrations to high-availability services.
Selected impact
I work across architecture and implementation: finding the bottleneck, choosing the right level of complexity, and carrying the solution into production.
Optimised SQL and reporting paths for large time-and-attendance datasets, bringing complex reports under one minute and selected core queries down to seconds.
Built EventBridge-scheduled reminders with Amazon SQS and application-level exactly-once processing for dependable clock-in and clock-out notifications.
Led the move from Oracle to MySQL at JD.com while contributing to the redesign of high-volume product and category platform architecture.
Delivered Lucene and Solr search platforms, Hadoop-based analytics, Spark and Flink pipelines, and Druid-backed real-time aggregation systems.
Apps & websites
Alongside large-scale backend systems, I use AI as a development multiplier to design and ship focused iOS products—from private finance tools to strategy games—and to expand what I can build end to end.
A private stock portfolio and cost-basis tracker for recording trades, understanding holdings and monitoring realised and unrealised performance across accounts and currencies.
Track spending, income, accounts, budgets and recurring bills with clear summaries and private, multilingual records.
A focused five-in-a-row game with AI play, local two-player matches and nearby LAN multiplayer.
A four-player Tractor card game with strategic AI opponents, local network play, match history and polished mobile interactions.
Technical range
My foundation is Java and the JVM, strengthened by hands-on work in cloud infrastructure, event-driven architecture, search, data engineering and C#/.NET Core.
Experience
From search infrastructure at Sohu and Youku to cloud services in Auckland, I’ve worked where software design meets demanding production reality.
Developed Java and Spring time-and-attendance services, optimised reporting, integrated payroll and ERP APIs, and improved AWS production reliability.
Used Spring Boot and Apache Flink for cross-site data synchronisation and developed security-critical user services including MFA and account protection.
Designed microservices and backend-for-frontend systems for SkillsVR, and helped establish API data standards and resilient service architecture.
Designed offline OLAP and real-time analytics platforms with Hadoop, Spark, Hive, HBase, Kylin and Druid, plus a unified student identity system.
Led architecture work for Huawei Life and JD’s product platforms, including performance improvement, security remediation and billion-record data migration.
Led the architecture overhaul of a large digital reading platform, developed its search engine and coordinated delivery across internal and partner teams.
Designed e-commerce, search, recommendation and real-time chat systems; named first inventor on four patent applications.
Used a 40+ server Hadoop cluster to analyse user and advertising behaviour and built advertising, scheduling and CRM systems.
Built Chinese search, crawling and advertising systems with Java, C++, Lucene and Berkeley DB, and led large database migrations.
Developed Java, JSP and EJB features for a large e-commerce platform backed by Oracle and WebLogic.
